Start with the filter and its history

If the vehicle is losing power or requesting frequent regens and nobody has diagnosed it, start with aftertreatment diagnostics. Cleaning can be part of the repair once the reason for the problem is understood.
What cleaning does
A DPF collects particles from exhaust. Regeneration reduces combustible soot, while noncombustible ash remains and accumulates over time. Ash service requires a suitable physical cleaning process or the replacement approach specified for the application. The EPA explains this distinction in its DPF operation and maintenance bulletin.
Cleaning is worth evaluating when the filter is suitable for reuse and its condition can be addressed by an appropriate process. A cracked or melted internal structure requires a different decision. The purpose of the inspection is to distinguish a serviceable filter from a part that should be replaced.
The work from intake to return
Identify the unit. Match the filter to the vehicle or machine. A part-number photo, engine information and your fleet unit or repair-order number help keep the job clear, especially when several filters arrive together.
Inspect its condition. Look at the assembly, connections and filter condition, along with the history of contamination or earlier repairs. Tell us about oil, coolant or fuel exposure before the cleaning work is selected.
Choose a compatible process. Filter construction and manufacturer guidance matter. Thermal, pneumatic and liquid-based methods have different applications; a method advertised for one filter is not automatically suitable for another.
Evaluate the result. The return decision considers inspection and testing relevant to the filter. When comparing measurements, the units and test conditions matter. A lower restriction reading alone cannot establish every aspect of filtration, catalyst activity or remaining life.
Plan the next step. A reusable filter returns to the installation workflow. A rejected filter needs an explanation and a replacement option. Any unresolved engine or control-system fault remains part of the vehicle repair.
Know what the quote covers
A bench-cleaning quote and an installed repair quote cover different work. Identify whether you need diagnosis, removal, cleaning, hardware, reinstallation and vehicle checks. Add pickup or freight to the same discussion so you can compare the complete job.

Questions about DPF cleaning
Can I bring in a filter that is already removed?
Yes. Include its identification and the reason for service. A removed filter can be evaluated on the bench, but that work cannot establish the condition of sensors, wiring or other systems still on the vehicle. Arrange the handoff before bringing or shipping it.
Will cleaning stop repeated regeneration?
It may help when serviceable filter restriction is part of the problem. Repeated regeneration also calls for a vehicle-level investigation. Share how often it happens, whether cycles finish, and what work has already been attempted.
How often should a DPF be cleaned?
Use the maintenance guidance for the exact engine and application, together with its service history. A highway tractor, an idling vocational truck and an off-highway machine should not inherit the same mileage schedule. Our DPF guides explain how to approach those differences.
What if the filter cannot be cleaned?
